In the 796th edition of Stedenbouw magazine, Lieke Bousema profiles the development of Stuurhut Tenderplein, a new rest facility for bus drivers at Schiphol designed by Benthem Crouwel NACO.

Opened in December 2025, Stuurhut Tenderplein is Schiphol’s first modular timber project, representing a milestone in the airport's goal to become circular by 2050.

Constructed from circular timber units, the design prioritises comfort, acoustics and indoor air quality. To ensure the building's longevity, we utilised modular construction, which allows buildings to be dismantled and relocated for future use.

Our team led the architectural design and the wider redevelopment of the bus platform. Drawing on our experience designing Schiphol’s new security checkpoints, we focused on creating a structure with minimal environmental impact, resulting in a low CO2 footprint and an impressive BCI score of 70 per cent.

The design is simple, logical and robust, and evokes the buses in which the drivers work every day. In this way, form and function come together seamlessly.”
