In addition to the work we carried out for Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Midfield Terminal project, we were also contracted in 2009 to deliver on the Airport’s South Airfield design and engineering works.
We undertook the planning, full detailed design and engineering for all civil, structural and electrical works for the new South Airfield, including the full rehabilitation and upgrade of runway 13R-31L to ICAO code F, new parallel taxiways and a new cargo apron. The design and phasing had to ensure that the airport remained fully operational. Everything associated with the South Airfield had to be integrated into the existing infrastructure.
We were responsible for the pavement investigations, conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs and tender documents for the rehabilitation of runway 13R-31L. The pavement works included the use of polymer modified asphalt (PMA), the technical specifications of which were tailored for the project and performance-based in order to ensure that the runway could sustain high wheel loads and tyre pressures under extreme temperature conditions – a unique approach in the industry.
