Following a unique design competition conducted remotely, NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants), a company of Royal HaskoningDHV, was named part of the winning terminal design team for a new international airport in Delhi, India.
NACO, a world-leading airport consultancy, supported master architects, Nordic-Haptic-Grimshaw, in submitting the winning design that will see the first terminal created for the Noida International Airport in Delhi. The design will incorporate flexible expansion options to serve 30 million passengers per year in the future.
After winning the contract to build and operate Noida International Airport in India in November 2019, Zurich Airport International launched the design competition in 2020 under unique and challenging constraints in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This required architects to prepare and present their designs remotely.
The winning design also had to meet pre-defined project objectives that included: the merging of Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality; creation of a modern, seamless passenger experience; and the setting of new benchmarks in sustainability for airport terminal buildings in India. Other objectives included envisioning green spaces inside and around the building, offering a concept for a future airport city and providing flexible expansion options to serve 30 million passengers annually in the future.

Commenting on the reasons for choosing the design team, Christoph Schnellmann, Chief Executive Officer, Noida International Airport said, “The team created the winning design with an efficient layout, convincing design language, multiple high-quality areas, spaced out with lush greenery with a balanced concept for both energy savings and a tangible sense of sustainability.” He continued, “The team demonstrated their proficiency in complementing customer comfort with sustainability, timeless design and flexibility for future needs. We will work closely with the team to ensure a design with everything available that a passenger expects at a world-class airport”.
Driven by the current challenging environment in aviation, the design makes the case for a ‘smart’ airport, with customer experience and sustainability at its heart. It will encompass parameters such as short and efficient passenger flows, digital services and commitment to minimal environmental impact.
Joeri Aulman, Region Manager at NACO, shared, “We are very happy to have contributed to winning the confidence of Zurich Airport through our involvement in the terminal competition design for Noida International Airport. Fully aligned with our focus on smart airports with customer experience and sustainability at its core, Noida International Airport will become a unique new gateway to the world city of Delhi and to the state of Uttar Pradesh”.
NACO has over 70 years’ experience working on more than 600 airports in over 100 countries around the world – and its scope includes Airport Planning, Digitisation, Baggage Handling Systems, IT, Security and Special Airport Systems Design. Further consultants in the team included STUP Consultants, Urban Systems Design, AKTII, SLA, COWI, Alan Thompson, Studio Fractal, AEON Consultants, and T2 Consulting.
