- Festive inauguration of JAC-ECG-NACO designed Passenger Terminal Building at Borg el Arab International Airport
On Thursday 21 October 2010 the new Terminal Building at Borg el Arab International Airport was opened and celebrated with a festive ceremony.
The opening of the new terminal building marks an important milestone for Borg el Arab International Airport (BEAA). With the opening of the new building 1.2 million passengers a year can be accommodated, more than doubling the capacity. Borg el Arab International Airport is located 40 km west of Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city located about 200 km north of Cairo along the Mediterranean Sea.
The new Terminal Building is designed to handle B777 large aircrafts and is a blend of functionality, state-of-the-art technology and local characteristics. Hank Cheriex, senior Architect at NACO: "We designed the terminal building to accommodate 1.2 million people, with a total floor area of 24,000 m2. The terminal meets international standards and is equipped with modern facilities to ensure efficient and safe airport operations."
From the early start onwards, NACO, together with Japan Airport Consultants (JAC) and local partner Engineering Consultants Group (ECG), was involved in the development of the Terminal Building and over 24 other building structures, including an air traffic control tower, cargo terminal building, rescue fire station and administration building. Planning and design services encompassed architectural works as well as airside and landside civil works. Furthermore, the joint venture of JAC-ECG-NACO (JEN) was responsible for the development of the electrical, mechanical, special and electronic systems and overall project management. During construction, an on-site team of specialists was present for the overall construction supervision and quality control.
