- NACO designs terminal expansion at Sarajevo International Airport
After succesful completion of the Planning, Design and Construction Supervion of the Terminal Rehabilitation ten years ago, NACO has now been awarded the assignment to develop the Final Design for the Terminal Expansion at Sarajevo International Airport.
After the rehabilitation, Sarajevo International Airport has been performing well. This was recognized on the 15th convention of ACI Europe, held in Munich in June 2005. Sarajevo International Airport was proclaimed the best European airport in the category of airports up to 1 million annual passengers.
In recent years, passenger traffic has increased significantly as a consequence of the growing economy and the emerging tourism as a growth sector for Bosnia & Herzegovina. In 2008, passenger traffic at the airport was just over half a million at 510.396 passengers.
While the airport is still functioning effectively, capacity constraints are starting to emerge, security and duty free facilities need to be expanded and most importantly, the terminal needs to be configured to prepare for Bosnia's inception into the Schengen zone.
Given its previous experience with the Sarajevo International Airport and its international track-record, NACO is ideally placed to develop a design that meets these requirements.
The design of the Terminal Expansion will be funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) through a dedicated contribution from the Netherlands Technical Cooperation Fund.
